With synthetic grass becoming more and more popular, we have gotten a lot of pet-specific queries from those who have fluffy loved ones. Check out some of the most frequent questions we get regarding synthetic grass for dogs in Charlotte.
IS IT SAFE FOR DOGS?
Yes! Synthetic grass is harmless to pets — canine and feline alike. Pet turf is created to be much more resilient than both organic turf and traditional artificial grass. You won’t need harsh pesticides or fertilizers, either, so you won’t be exposed to those chemicals like you would with organic turf. Your pooch can be allergic to grass pollen, so when you make the shift to artificial, you might even see Fido encounter fewer allergies, too.
HOW DO YOU DISPOSE OF PET WASTE?
Pets can use the turf as their bathroom like they naturally know how to do — the only difference here is the clean-up process is simple for you. It is much simpler to clean pet waste off artificial grass, and the grass won’t fade or become stained from pet urine or feces. Southwest Greens pet turf is crafted with an advanced backing system under the surface that allows urine and other liquids to drain more effectively than real grass. For solid waste, simply let it dry a little before clean-up for best results. If you’re left with stains, a quick spray with the hose will eliminate any remaining waste.
WILL IT SMELL BAD FROM DOG URINE?
Artificial turf has no scent, so if any odors do occur, it’s typically caused by dog urine specifically. Many pets favor to use a specific area of the backyard to do their business, so occassionally, you can get a little more of a build-up of odor. Southwest Greens turf system is antimicrobial, which tends to decrease the odor, but there are steps you can take to ensure no smells ramain. We recommend you use a solution of one-to-one parts water and vinegar to spray Fido’s favorite bathroom area. Let it dry to remove any dawdling smell.

HOW MUCH DOES SYNTHETIC TURF COST?
This will largely depend on your specific project, so it’s hard to provide you an exact estimate. A few factors that might affect the price are:
- Size/dimensions of the area being converted from natural turf to synthetic
- Complexity of design and layout you want to put in place
- Type of artificial turf products you're looking to get
- How much work needs to be done (get rid of old turf, even out the surface, etc.)
Tread cautiously with contractors who provide you a set cost of the project, in spite of how much work it involves. This is usually a tell-tale sign that they aren’t utilizing high-quality materials.
