Why you should hire the professionals, and why Southwest Greens Charlotte is #1 for installation practices.
Perhaps you’re asking yourself, “Can I install artificial grass myself?” Sure, you could try to install artificial grass yourself, but it’s not a simple task. The equipment and tools you’d need cost a lot, it takes a while to DIY, and you may void the warranty. So, let’s look at why you need to have your artificial golf turf professionally installed and artificial turf installation best practices.
WHY PROFESSIONAL ARTIFICIAL GRASS INSTALLATION
Regardless if you are interested in adding a golf green to your personal property, or a commercial golf course, having artificial turf professionally installed will save you time, headaches, and money — and, in the long run, give you a better-looking green.
Saved Time
Even seemingly small do-it-yourself projects can often evolve into a big problem. We’ve all been there. Multiple trips to the hardware store for tools or supplies we didn’t realize we’d need, plans not going to plan, multiple days of laborious work? Choosing to have your turf professionally installed, you’ll save time, and you’ll enjoy the greens sooner.
In order to properly install artificial golf greens, you need to level the ground, add a base of crushed aggregate, add padding, place the turf, add infill, and roll the turf to get the best playability and to make it look as real as possible. Trimming edges so you have clean borders is tricky and takes a lot of experience to get just right. All of this necessitates some specialized tools and knowledge to do correctly to avoid wonky sections and edges that peel up creating unpleasant aesthetics.
Difficult Soil/Landscape
Perfect soil is scarce. Most property owners can attest to this. It is rare to be able to get your shovel into the dirt without problems. Instead, we must struggle with stones, clay, or soil overrun with roots from plants and trees nearby in many places. Digging alone can be tiring work. Worse, if you’re digging into roots, you could be damaging surrounding trees you want to keep healthy.
We have had to deal with obstacles such as large boulders, old (or new) irrigation lines, and tree stumps on many of our installation projects. Every one of these obstacles must be removed or repurposed. Excavation also produces tons of soil you may not want — what will you do with it? We regularly have to move this excess soil offsite.
A professional artificial turf installer can arrange all of this on your behalf. So if you’re not wanting to do very difficult manual labor or don’t know what to do with your excavated soil, hiring an installation professional for your project is your best choice.
Large Areas
When golf green is installed in a large area, seaming becomes one of the most challenging parts of the turf to get right. Seeming is the process of joining two or more pieces together. Very similar to carpet installation, when turf seams are joined correctly, they are not noticeable. When seams aren’t done correctly, they will stand out and give a disappointing finished product.
Imagine this: rolling up a piece of paper or a poster. Do you always get the alignment perfect when trying to execute a good roll? Sometimes instead of a clean edge, end up with paper sticking out on one side. This same thing is possible when seaming artificial turf. One minor misstep in the beginning will mess up the whole project and look awful when finished. A professional installer will have tons of experience doing seams and they’ll make sure everything looks great before they’re finished.
THE SOUTHWEST GREENS WAY
There are three things that differentiate Southwest Greens Charlotte from everyone else in the turf industry — craftsmanship, guarantees, and customer service. We do not believe in one-size-fits-all artificial turf installations, and because of that, we’ve mastered the art and science of Charlotte artificial turf installation. We’ve perfected our process with at least 6,000 golf greens around the world under our belts.
Here is a quick look at how our artificial putting green installation process works.
- A crushed aggregate base, which, unlike concrete, can be moistened and molded to form challenging breaks and undulations.
- Next, we install at least a cushion pad that helps the ball roll and shot absorption, then comes our state-of-the-art polypropylene turf material that is used to replicate the vibrant green color, softness, and playability of regular grass.
- Then we in-fill the turf with a formulation of fine-coated silica sand to give it the touch and feel of real grass.
- Finally, roll the turf to give the effect of natural bent grass green. Options include installing first and second cuts fringe, sand traps, bunkers, fairways, and roughs.
